Listing Your Webpage in Directories
Listing your website and business in different directories can be additional exposure for your products or services that you offer, but be selective who you list with. Just like choosing your advertising partners or solution providers, it is very important to choose only reputable and preferred directory sites. Even if the directory provider is not a part of your company it could reflect poorly on you if you list with numbers of questionable companies.
Choosing a web directory site like dmoz.org is a safe and intelligent desicion. DMOZ (Open Directory Project) was established a number of years ago and is arguably the most popular website directory on the Internet. DMOZ is a massive directory of websites that are categorized to help users narrow down the type of sites that they are looking for. DMOZ is moderated and edited by volunteers. These volunteers are screened and reviewed by the directors of the ODP. Getting your site listed with the Open Directory Project can be frustrating and sometimes takes a while, but should be done.
For businesses there are fee based programs like those offered by Thomas Register (ThomasNet.com). At one time, the Thomas Register was a large publication company that helped businesses find other businesses through there extensive publications (The Big Green Books). As the popularity of the Internet began to grow, the demand for these publications diminished. With this shift, Thomas Register began providing their directory online along side of there publications. Now Thomas Register has eliminated the publications and completely migrated to an online directory. Though this service is not a free one, the back-links that they can provide to your site are highly qualified and in some cases be cheaper than back-link shopping.
Choosing the correct directories to list your site with can is well worth the time and energy that you put into it. You will want to stay away from any site that could be considered a "Link Farm". These types of sites will do much more harm to your search engine optimization efforts than they are worth. I suggest choosing from sites that are reputable by name or have a standing reputation with your company.
